Kiel Canal
And you are probably wondering why I have waited so long to do this, since the cruise ship transit season is about over. Well, I just discovered the Kiel canal as a fun project a few weeks ago. Here is a link to a brief history of the canal: http://www.kiel-canal.de/kiel-canal/history/index.htm The east entrance to the canal is in the port of Kiel, which is a fjiord. Cruise ships and large cruise ferries call here, the ferries daily. In this picture, a Stena Line ferry is shown. Color Line ferry would be docked across the water: Entrance to the Kiel-Holtenau locks is around the curve to the left: In the middle of the canal is the port of Rendsburg. There appears to be quite a lot of industry there. They used to have a shipyard, maybe still do. In reading about the Logos II and her replacement, Logos Hope, I read that the latter was built in Rendsburg. The railroad bridge we see in our favorite cam is hardly distinguishable to right center in this picture, by the cluster of yellow buildings: To us, the view appears rural, but the cam is in the buildings here, which is why we often see vessels tied up there: Last stop is the locks at Brunsbeuttel:

Fantastic CJ.....after all your wonderful captures recently...doesn't matter if the season is about to end (this year) Thanks for the wonderful aerial photos and links...has made me appreciate this area a bit more. :D :D

Keil is on the Baltic Sea,( where we entered as we had left Copenhagen) Brunsbeuttel is on the North Sea. I remember large ships as we came out of the canal, on the North Sea.

Today we have Ocean Nova, a Quark Expedition ship, one of those little ones that cost you $1000/day. She was on the canal schedule for April 26, but I never saw her. She is not on the schedule today, but she's there... That Schacht-Audorf cam is driving me crazy again...Had a really good shot, and it shut down my browser and I lost it. Did this to me last year and I ended up emailing the pics to myself. CJ

Notice on the map that Jackie posted that Flensburg is just Northwest of Kiel. It was/is where the new Coastal class BC Ferries were/are built. Third one should be just about ready to sail and should be coming through the canal when it does. Have a little closer connection to #3 - a neighbour, who is himself a retired ferry Captain tells me that his son will be captaining Coastal Celebration across. She will be calling in London on the way and will enter The Pool as part of the 2010 Winter Olympics promotion.

How GREAT, Cliff. Very exciting :D :D :D Now, FSG has webcams, but I don't think either of the ships showing is Celebration :?: :?: When does she leave for the Kiel Canal :?: :?: http://www.fsg-ship.de/

Best info I can get is that she is due to leave Flensburg May 6. No dates have been posted on the BC Ferries website yet. Will post something as soon as I find out. Don't think she will be anywhere close to QE2.

Liz- 05-02-2008

No, I don't think anywhere near QE2  :D , but she should show up loud and clear on the Canal-Cup AIS map :D

:? Anyone have any idea what this is? Google search for "Marine Projects Ltd." gave me a link to a company based in Gdansk that manufactures ship parts. http://marineprojects.pl/ofirmien.htm

It looks like the bow of a ship, complete with the bulb.
