Old write up but this is goes along with Wolfie's picture: SAILING IN LUXURY ON THE SMC DEUTSCHLAND By Larry Fox and Barbara Radin Fox (c) 2000 Larry Fox and Barbara Radin Fox In a cruise world dominated by ever-bigger and ever-more lavish ships, it's wonderful to sail on a ship that bases its attraction on its beauty and fine foods than on the newest gimmick--a miniature golf course, climbing wall, ice-skating rink or a spa the size of Rhode Island, for example. Peter Deilmann's Deutschland is, quite simply, the most beautiful ship we have ever sailed on. The Deutschland, which debuted in 1998, is 22,400 grt and 574 feet long. The ship carries a maximum of 520 passengers and a crew of 240. Instead of chrome, mirrors, plastic and similar synthetics found on ships of the larger cruise lines, the Deutschland is decorated in burled woods, brass, stained and etched glass, leather and molding - - a combination that is a throwback to the days when first class cruising was the ultimate in style and decor. Better yet, the food--always a questionable feature of cruise ships--was superb, from breakfast buffets to grill lunches on deck to elegant dinners. But having said all that, this cruise may not be for everyone. There are things it doesn't have: a casino, veranda cabins, and those ubiquitous discount sales of gold, watches and clothing found on many ships. Oh, and one other thing: the Deutschland, a German-owned ship that is marketed mainly to Germans and Northern Europeans, carries few Americans. It is this last feature that may prove the most disconcerting to American cruise passengers. On the cruise we took, there were only 14 American or English travelers, out of a passenger roster of about 500. The staff does make accommodations for this: announcements are made in German and English, the menus usually (but not always) had translations, and the crew usually (but not always) could speak enough English so we could get along. And many of the german passengres, of course, also knew English. The only drawback from the ship's split German/English personality onboard was after dinner, during the nightclub entertainment. Each act was introduced by an emcee who delivered in a long discourse in German, which he occasionally followed up with a few words of English. Most of the time we had no clue what was going on, but the entertainment we saw--cabaret acts, a mediocre magician, an apparent comedian (to judge on the basis of laughter from the German speakers, and vocalists and musicians--was okay, but certainly not a must-see. In between teh acts, a small group played dance music, which was the best part of the evening enetrtainment. On our cruise, from Genoa to Venice, with stops in Livorno (for Florence), Sicily, Corfu and Dubrovnik, special English-language guided shore excursions were available, though we had to sign up for them at least two weeks before the ship's departure. This thoughful option was very imporant to our enjoyment of the shroe excursions, and also resulted in a quick bonding of all the English-speakers on board. (Deilmann officials said the line will always offer the English-language shore tours for any number of English speakers, even as few as two, but with the restriction that the tours must be booked in advance so they can make arrangements.) The ship excursions were excellent, with good tour guides and thoughtful schedules that allowed us some freedom to shop and sightsee on our own. Life aboard was no less interesting. The ship had a spa offering massage treatments and indoor pool and sauna, which disconcerted some passengers because the sauna was nude and coed. The ship has also a saltwater outdoor pool, which was refreshing after a day of sightseeing. Dining, as we have said, was sensational. There were two sittings in the Berlin Restaurant, the main dining room which was decorated in art deco style. The food and service was always impeccable. One deck above was the more-intimate, reservations-only Four Seasons Restaurant. The food there was better than in the main dining room, but the service was slower for some reason, resulting in a very long dining experience. For informal dining, there was the Lido restaurant, which was popular with the breakfast and lunch crowd. One evening, though, after a late return from a shore excursion in Florence, we opted to dine there rather than change for the more formal dining rooms. And, like our meals there at breakfast and lunch, the dinner buffet was no less outstanding. Pre- or after-dinner diversions include the Adlon Lounge, which featured cigars, chocolates and liqueurs; the Old Fritz Pub, a cozy wood-and-leather lounge; the Lili Marleen Salon, where a pianist or trio played before dinner; and the Emperors' Ballroom the main theater for entertainment and dancing. Our around-Italy itinerary will be repeated next October. Before then, the the Deutschland will offers cruises from 7 to 22 nights in the Indian Ocean, to Africa, the Caribbeam, South America, the Amazon, Western Europe and the Baltic and North Seas. And if you are seeking a European cruise experience that is a bit better than most upscale ships and a touch different in ambiance, the Deutschland may be the ship for you.

She sounds LOVELY :D :D Technical question, though. I KNOW she was in NYC a couple of years ago, cause I took a picture of her. If she DOES have real wood :D :D :D , .....thought that was a "no-no" in US ports :?: :?: :?: Supposedly why Sea Cloud cannot call in US :?: :?:
