QE2 to 'open new liner terminal'
QE2 to 'open new liner terminal' The ship is set to celebrate its 40th birthday in Liverpool One of the world's most famous liners is set to celebrate its 40th birthday by opening Liverpool's new cruise liner terminal in September 2007. A Cunard spokesman confirmed on Friday that discussions were under way for the liner to mark its milestone with a day long party on the River Mersey. Work begins in April on the 350 metre (1,148ft) extension to Princes Dock. The QE2 was the last great Cunard liner conceived at its Pier Head HQ before the company moved to Southampton. A Cunard spokesman said: "We have plans to take the QE2 to Liverpool for its anniversary but they have yet to be finalised." http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/merseyside/4723816.stm

This is from our local Liverpool newspaper today: £19m cruise liner stage to be ready in weeks Mar 22 2007 by Larry Neild, Liverpool Daily Post LIVERPOOL’S new £19m cruise liner landing stage is to be floated into place in a matter of weeks. The concrete stage is being built in three segments at Canada Dock which will be bolted together and floated into the river in May for the short journey to its new berth. The boost for the Mersey comes as it was revealed the cruise company that starred in the television hit, The Love Boat, is to bring one of its flagship liners to Liverpool four times during the city’s culture year. The Grand Princess, which carries more than 3,000 passengers and 1,500 crew, will dock at the 1,000ft-long berth in the river after adding Liverpool to its 2008 itinerary. The arrival of one of the world’s biggest cruise liners is a major coup for Liverpool as hundreds of construction workers race to complete the new landing stage in Canada Dock. The Grand Princess is owned by the world’s biggest cruise company, Carnival, which owns Cunard and the QE2 and QM2. A drilling platform is being used off Princes Dock to construct the piles and anchor points needed for the new cruise facility. The big -*test*-('") will come on July 29 when the first cruise liner ties up to offload 1,100 sightseers close to the Liverpool waterfront. Angie Redhead, the city council’s cruise manager, said last night: “Everything is on schedule and going according to plan. It is an exciting time for Liverpool and comes as the interest in cruise holidays has moved to a new level. “Balfour Beatty is doing a fantastic job in Canada Dock and it is terrific to see so many local people employed in the construction of the new stage right here on the Mersey. “Once the new facility is in place, it will have to undergo a range of trials and -*test*-('")s. We already have seven liners booked in for 2007, the first on July 29. “The big occasion will come on September 21 when the QE2 will arrive for the naming ceremony. We still have not chosen a name for the facility and we are likely to hold a local competition.” Last week, Ms Redhead was in Miami for the cruise industry’s biggest conference, Seatrade International. “There is incredible interest in Liverpool across the industry. The difference a year makes is incredible. Twelve months ago, the talk was of the birthplace of the Beatles and a cruise facility in the pipeline. This year, the talk was of European Capital of Culture and everyone talking about what is happening here. “Our target has been to work towards 30 liners a year, but from the reaction in Miami, I believe the number will be exceeded.” Ms Redhead, who was born in Liverpool, has worked in the cruise and leisure industry in Cuba, Mexico and Ibiza, and jumped at the chance of running a cruise operation in her home city. “There are few places in the world where the largest cruise liners can tie up in the heart of a stunning city-centre waterfront. It will put us on a par with places like St Petersburg.” Martin King, director of tourism at the region's designated tourist board, The Mersey Partnership, said last night: “With a first-class, facility, we will be welcoming some of the world's finest cruise liners and their passengers to our World Heritage City. “Liverpool is the perfect gateway to England's North West and I am sure the world's cruise operators and their guests will see the unique appeal of our destination. “The new facility will also provide us with a valuable legacy lasting long after the excitement of our year as European Capital of Culture.” So we might see something concrete in the river soon! Albert.
