Tallinn Sea Cloud II

ronc- 06-24-2007

liz can you tell me wich ship this is in kiel tonight please

Liz- 06-24-2007

She is lovely, Ronc, but I have no idea. Am doing some searching :D Interesting rigging :? :? :? Looks like she is carrying her stern fore and aft sail on the same mast as the square sails :? :? :? Or is this an optical illusion :?: :?:

Don't know who but found out what :- It is a BRIG "A vessel with a main- and a foremast, which was deprived of a mainsail on the mainyard and with the lower part of the mainmast rigged as a mizzenmast, was called a brig." That might help narrow the search for an identity.

8) 8) 8) 8) Cliff I had always thought that a brig was two masts and completely square-rigged  , but had just found this "Brig- is a two-masted vessel with both masts square rigged. On the sternmost mast, the main mast, there is also a gaff sail"

c-to-sea- 06-24-2007

I am thinking that she might be Gerda Gefle, a Swedish training ship after the original 19th. century sailing ship. Have a look at :- http://www.briggengerda.com/ Under Briggen Idag, click on GERDA GELFE fakta My only hesitation is that the diagram shows a gaffrigged mizzen and the picture looks like the sail she is flying is triangular. She is out of Sweden so the geography fits.

I know, the mizzen sail is confusing me, totally :?: :?: :?: I just don't think I have ever seen a ship which looked quite like Ronc's capture before :?: Found a picture of Gerda Gefle here, but doesn't really show much :?: http://www.gastrikland.com/info.asp/catID/4/subCat/B%E5t%2Fkanot/objID/23089

The three biggest sailing ships in Norway, S/S Soerlandet, S/S Christian Radich and S/S Statsraad Lehmkuhl was gathered in Leirvik this weekend, celebrating Stord on it's 10 year's jubilee as a city. The fact that these three ships are gathered in the same harbour, and behind each other, is something that's not happening that often. So this is a sight not many people have seen.
