s.s. Rotterdam coming home
According to a press release by De Rotterdam BV and publications in the newspapers, the s.s. Rotterdam will depart from Wilhelmshaven early Saturdaymorning and will arrive at her future berth at the Maashaven in Rotterdam at 09.00 in the evening on Monday 4 August. This schedule can be ruined by the weather as the forecast in Wilhelmshaven for Saturday shows wind from South-West force 5. The tug company will only sail at less than force 5. Wilhelmshaven Port Authority can confirm on Friday late afternoon if the departure will be at the scheduled time. Please keep your fingers crossed. - - With a group of friends, I have chartered the former minesweeper AMS60 Bernisse to welcome the s.s. Rotterdam at Maas Pilot Station and to accompany her to Rotterdam.

My fingers are crossed for nice, sunny, calm weather! :D Very cool that you will be there to welcome her home, Willem! I am looking forward to the pictures! :D

Definitely fingers CROSSED :!: :!: :D :D We should be able to track you on VTS :?: :D Is that the pilot station circled in red :?: :?: :?: and just where will she be going :?: The Pilot Station is just about your red circle   The future berth of the s.s. Rotterdam will be in Maashaven, to be exactly at the 3rd Katendrechtse Hoofd. If you are familiar in Rotterdam: do you know where the Cruise Terminal at the Wilhelminakade is ? ? Behind that pier, the harbourentrance in front of Hotel New York, is Rijnhaven. The next harbour going west (to the sea) is Maashaven. At the entrance you see on the right hand side the ventilationbuilding of the Maastunnel (with that green roof). On the left hand side will be the berth of the ship. It is located just opposite the Euromast.

No, I have never been to Rotterdam   Not something we can see from the Paul Martens cam, I imagine :?: http://www.virtualvisit.nl/webcam/index.htm No, the water on the right is the Rijnhaven. On the left is the river Nieuwe Maas. http://maps.google.nl/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=112830581649792566267.000001126620d2f0e3377&ll=51.916321,4.408264&spn=0.024671,0.068836&z=14&om=1 On this map you find the stops of the watertaxi. Find the big harbour called 'Waalhaven' , follow the river to the right and the next harbour is Maashaven. Between Rijnhaven and Maashave you see a peninsula, which is called Katendrecht. On the outmost left corner of that peninsula, at the river, will be the berth for the s.s. Rotterdam. For those interested, Katendrecht used to be Rotterdam's red light district, allbeit that the ladies were not at the windows, but were standing at the door.

Wilhelmshaven Port Authority has just updated their website and is now showing as ETD: 2 August 2008 at 07.00 am. Earlier this week they promised by phone to give final confirmation later this day. I will keep you informed. On the website of the owners, http://www.derotterdam.com you can follow the homebound voyage, unfortunately it seems they will only provide this information in Dutch.

The s.s. Rotterdam will be towed from Wilhelmshaven to Rotterdam by two tugs of the Rotterdam Towingcompany KOTUG. That will be the RT MAGIC and RT SPIRIT. When arriving at Hook of Holland, two more boats will join as 'steering boats', being the SD SHARK and probably the SD SEAHORSE.

Liz- 08-01-2008

Thanks, Willem Glad none of the tugs is the DeDa :!: :!:  :D THEY should show on VTS, even if Rotterdam does not. What is their new ETA for Rotterdam :?:

Weather is looking awful in Wilhelmshaven today. I hope it clears soon. http://www.stadtwerke-wilhelmshaven.de/stw_whv/index_173.php# Cam view changes but only once each hour. :(

Willem- 08-01-2008

Looking back to the previous hours, it looked very good from 06.00 till 09.00 At 10.00 raindrops were on the lens. The Dutch northern seacoast is now suffering 6 Bft (Terschelling),, 5 Bft (Den Helder). Leeuwarden and Groningen 4 Bft. The bad weather is moving north, so I do hope it will pass during the night. General expectations for Saturday is 4 Bft, but that van vary in each part of the country.

We have just received the message from Wilhelmshaven that the final decision for departure will be taken on Saturdaymorning at 06.00 am. If it is a yes, than the harbourtugs will take her at 07.00 through the locks and the seatugs will take her at 08.00. This has been decided as at the moment the northern Dutch coast is suffering winds of 5 Bft (Terschelling) and 6 Bft (Den Helder). Following image was published in a newspaper and show the route from Wilhelmshaven to Rotterdam.

redqueen- 08-01-2008

Thanks for all the updates Willem. :-)

Willem- 08-02-2008

This morning, at 08.59 am, all lines were gone and the harbourtugs are now taking the s.s. Rotterdam through the locks. Thereafter the seatugs RT Magic and RT Spirit will take her home. :D :D :D
