Thanks Stephen, very interesting.

He looks so young...
what was his age at the time of the sinking...
Is it not amazing how so many ships have gone down in history but this one has become so well known and the word Titantic used so often to describe
hopeless situations.
And more lifeboats would have been on board except for the design changes.
How tragic.
Lancashirelad- 08-01-2006
Dani, he was born on the 2nd June 1878 so he was about 34 at the time.

Too young, Stephen!
Thanks for posting the photos which were taken, I assume, before 29 July - you have hardly had time to sleep since then
Where was his home town?
Lancashirelad- 08-01-2006
The pictures were taken this afternoon, The town is called Colne, and is only about 20 miles from where I live. I guess we will never know if he really did play nearer my god to thee as the ship went down, but I like to believe it.
robyn- 08-01-2006
Thanks for the info Stephen - I'd like to believe it too!
BDAdaughter- 08-02-2006
Thanks, Stephen - we need a jolt like this once in awhile to seperate movies/tv from reality and real human beings...
I'd also like to believe that he played that hymn .
Lancashirelad- 08-02-2006
I agree Phyllis, I am sure there were a lot of "young" people who watched the film Titanic, did not know it was based on a real ship. The film makers did visit Colne to see the monument so they could cast a person who looked like him to play him. Now you will all have to watch the film again so see if he does.
I will try to get some photos of the cemitery in Halifax where many of these who lost their lives are buried. Unfortunately, I will not have time to get any pictures of the monuments in Southampton. If anyone else gets chance it would be nice to have photos of thos on here as well.

From 'Titanic Survivor' Memoirs of Violet Jessop who survived both the Titanic & Britannic Disasters, introduced, edited & annotated by John Maxtone Graham.
Chapter 21 , Into the Lifeboat P 132
'I tried not to hear what he said, not wanting to believe what he accepted stoically. Instead, I listened to the faint sounds of music from Jock's men. They were playing Nearer My God to Thee.

"Into the Lifeboat" how apt.
Lancashirelad- 08-04-2006
For anyone who does not know how "Nearer my god to thee" goes, here is a link to the tune and words.

Ive heard rumours that they are wanting/going to build another "titanic". Does anyone know any truth to this or any information?
cruisegirl- 08-05-2006
Stephen,
glad you posted that.... Very cool....I'm a major Titanic fan and love seeing all parts of it.... I've been infatuated by the Ship and Story since very young..... Read about it in history and as a young one, when I heard people died and went down with the ship, I said, "go get them"... The mind of a child.... I couldn't handle thinking of them being down there and not buried for their families.... You can't even imagine the books, literature I have on this..... And my most prized item, the Senate Hearings...... Amazing.....

Joey, I have been hearing stories that "they" going to build a look a like titanic for years, but I don't think anything ever came of it.
