Trish & Ed land cruise Canadian National Railway
A cruise is a cruise is a cruise. This was our land cruise. We left Yulee 6am Monday May 7 and flew to Vancouver, arriving around noon. We checked in to the hotel and began a sightseeing tour of Vancouver. We went to the suspension bridge, across the water from the cruise ship port. If you do not like heights or swaying bridges, stay off of this. We were above the water as you can see in the photos and if does sway. Especially when somebody gets on the bridge that wants to see how much. Tuesday we boarded the train and headed east for Jasper. We were in the next to last car of a 23 car passenger train. We were called to dinner and sat down to a four course meal that was fantastic. Almost forgot to mention that after leaving the Vancouver station we were offered sparkling wine and appetizers. We than retired to the observation car for some fantastic views of the Rockies. We thought we saw a wonderful view and than around the next corner was a view better than the last. We finally retired for the evening and had mints on the pillow. Tuesday we arrived in Jasper with a stay at the Athabasca Hotel. Lovely hotel in center of town and one block from the train station. You walk in and think you are in the 1930 or 40 era. Wonderful lobby with wide wooden staircase to the second and third floor and no elevator. We took a short hike around town and came across deer and elk. Thursday we walked across the street to get breakfast and had to wait for the deer to go first. Most people in the town either walk or ride a bike. Very little vehicle traffic. We spent Thursday riding down to Lake Louise with a stop along the road for some long horn sheep, mountain goats and elk. We stopped first at the ice fields and took a tour up to the glacier. Lake Louise was still frozen but wonderful view of the mountains and snow. Friday we toured the Athabasca Falls and went to Maligne canyon and lake. This is country that everyone must put on the to do list. Saturday we boarded the next train thru and continued on to Toronto. Wonderful meals and views the entire trip and the dinner rolls were hot every evening. We arrived in Toronto Monday evening around 9, got a cab to the hotel at the airport and flew home the next day to Yulee. Picture will follow.

WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL Beautiful pictures....Long Horn Sheep...Trains... How can you go wrong... Liz can tell you that we hear the clickey-clack of the trains from our house all night....and the plaintive whistles calling you to get on board. A perfect land cruise...one that you cannot get down here... The passengers trains I have seen around here...do not make me want to ride them. Thanks for sharing. :D

Stunning photos, Trish & Ed! Slightly different terrain from the Florida flat lands, eh? Sounds and looks like it was a spectacular trip! :D

What a wonderful idea .... A fantasy come true ! Sean and his grandfather had real striped Railroad hats ...they used to run my father's model trains together. :D

Beautiful views- takes me back 25 years. We did the rail trip in 1982. When we went in 2003( after Alaska cruise), we saw similar sheep in Miette- we thought they were goats. Apparently you can tell which is which by the tails, sheep have short ones!

Terry you are right about the difference between flat Florida and Canada. We were in the flat farming country for awhile and than back to the mountains. Will have to check out the Railroad Museum. Dani. I was ready for the clickty-clack of the rails to put me to sleep, but Canada uses continuous rail, no clack or click.

I was ready for the clickty-clack of the rails to put me to sleep, but Canada uses continuous rail, no clack or click. QUELLE BUMMER, YOU CANADIANS....WHERE IS YOUR ROMANCE WITH TRADITIONAL TRAIN SOUNDS ?

Glorious pictures :D :D But, YES, would definitely miss the clickety clack. LOVE sleeping on trains, not that I would ever sleep much, cause was SO afraid I'd miss something out the window :D Yes, WONDERFUL TRAIN CLICKETIES and whistles to be heard in Olathe :D :D

Glad you enjoyed your visit to Canada. Your pictures brought back some memories of when we lived in Calgary for a few years. Coming from the West Coast, we missed the mountains so went to Banff regularly on weekends. We drove through the Rockies several times and always saw plenty of wildlife. I notice that there are few pictures of the portion of your trip between Alberta and Ontario. I guess when you have seen one prairie, you have seen them all, eh. Too bad about the clickety-clack. Long gone now along with the mournful sound of the steam whistle.
